What a great idea. Condos, office buildings, sports stadiums. Wait a minute! The government would never let that happen. Why, then, is the government allowing the Bonneville Salt Flats to move toward extinction? There is no good reason except total incompetence or worse. Since the beginning of the last century, the Bonneville Salt Flats have been used to seek the limits of cars and bikes. Since 1948, the Salt Flats have been used for organized speed trials. Since 1949 Hot Rod Magazine has awarded the most prestigious award for top speed. The Bonneville Salt Flats are a symbol of racing. What could be more? They are also a national landmark. They are on the National Register of Historic Places. They are designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. This is an important place.
The Bureau of Land Management has legal and moral obligations to preserve and protect this historic place. What are they doing? Nothing! Daily, they violate Federal Law and no one is stopping them. Until now. You can change this! In fact, only you can change this.
Save the Salt is asking that you contact your representatives in Congress and demand that they write and call the Director of the Bureau of Land Management and insist that the mining in the areas close to the Bonneville Salt Flats be stopped. If the BLM refuses to heed our demands, hearings will be held in Congress and legislation will be introduced to end the mining near the Bonneville Salt Flats. We will need you to request that your representatives in Congress support the hearings and the legislation.
How do you find your representatives? Go to www.contactingthecongress.org. Type in your zip code and click “submit it.” This will provide the information necessary to e-mail or phone your representatives. Last, please forward a copy of your e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org and send Save the Salt copies of the letters the representatives send to the BLM and to you. You can scan and send the letters to email@example.com or mail them to Save the Salt at Russ Deane, P.O. Box 27747, Panama City, FL 32411. We need this to force the government to do the right thing.
The Bonneville Salt Flats deserve your support.
