We get this question all the time, so I would like the readers to weigh in. Does a color change reduce the value of a collector Pontiac?

1. Justified color change is Gold, Tan or Verdoro Green! Green and Gold interiors also get a pass. Even if the color is changed from one of those, it has to stay in the same family of what was originally offered. Once a gold, tan or green car affects the value no matter what. My guess would be dependent upon the person standing in front of you feels how much it is worth to him. My guess would be at least 10-20% with no scientific or definitive evidence or statistics to back it up. No offense to the green, tan or gold fans!

2. Any earthtone is a viable candidate for a color change. I believe that the colors used should still be those offered for the year of the car.
The question of: Does adding options not originally on the car add to the value as well? I believe so. Some of us are simply restoring a car to the way we would have ordered it ourselves. My understanding is that judges won't hold it against you, if the option was original to the year.

3. I believe at best, the color should be an original option, but consider this...times have changed and the way the car was built represents the tastes of the time. To really experience what the original owner was feeling, you have to look at it thru their eyes. Those weird earth tones are what sold then and I love 'em. The same goes for restifications, if you add fast ratio steering and complete poly/aftermarket suspension, EFI and overdrive, are you really experiencing a classic the way it was meant to be? Or are you projecting your vision of what you'd like to be able to buy today? A friend of mine had a restored 58 GMC truck with all original equipment, ie: vacuum wipers, 3 on the tree shift and manual drum brakes and steering. He said he loved driving it because "the way it is, is the way it was". That's just one way of looking at it, I like some upgrades such as overdrive and poly bushings, but you'll never find EFI on my car!

4. I had a Buccaneer red 75 TA. I had it pain ted 93 Ford Cobra red. Much better shade of red. Paint the car any color you like. I wouldn't own a car that I couldn't modify. I leave that for other people.
