First, let me start off by saying that if you have a naturally aspirated two-valve, you have no business taunting anything LS-powered. Even with every bolt-on under the sun you won't make 300hp which still wouldn't be enough power.
Here's the story: This past weekend I was challenged by more Mustangs than I have been in a while. I don't street race, nor do I condone it at all. Thankfully, all of these scenarios went down close to a dragstrip....what luck.
Saturday was a regular old day for me. I was ripped off by GameStop when I sold them my Playstation 2 along with what seemed like 4,000 games. As I was pulling into the parking lot a red Mustang GT felt the need to put his car in neutral and rev at me, then proceeded to put the car back into drive and it made some horrible Ford noises before hiccuping along its way. After getting had by the game geeks, I left the parking lot in haste because the new Testament CD was on and the riff to "More Than Meets the Eye" is cooler than respecting speed limits.
As I pulled out I probably hit 60-70% throttle and short shifted so I would feel cool. This was enough to summon the two-valve wonder several cars back. He flew by me at a quickened pace only to slam on the brakes for the next light. I had already engaged the clutch and popped the tranny into neutral because, unlike this guy, I wasn't foolish and saw the light turn red about a hundred yards back. He was probably too busy making sure he still looked like an idiot.
Wouldn't you know it but we catch the light with each other and he's laughing hysterically. I just shake my head and wonder why he really thinks his loud exhaust-having GT is anything special. He gives me a small, timid rev to which I don't respond to. (At least this guy had a manual) The track surface was fully prepped and the light went green. He nailed it out of the hole and I just left the light normally. He shoots ahead and then slows down to rest next to me again...this time he begins to egg me on and I'm done with this fool. I down shift and wait for him to nail it. (Folks....I know my car isn't anything special, but I also know how poorly the two-valve motivates Mustangs.) The GTO flat-out embarrassed this clown and I made sure he enjoyed the sweet tone of American Racing Headers + Corsa Sport + LS2. Well in his defense, he looked as though he needed a new wardrobe and make a quick exit into the mall parking lot.
The story continues onto Sunday night. I was returning from dinner and a movie with a friend when I passed a lethargic GT in the left lane. Shortly after I was ahead of the car, their ego was bruised and they had to catch back up to me...they did so by laying into throttle and passing me. My friend started shaking her head because this is a common occurrence whenever she's in the car (S2000, Trans Am, Vette, a few others). "Are you going to race him?" she asks. I replied no because we weren't near a safe track and the fuzz frequents the area. This GT guy did the same thing and slowed down to let me catch up so they could ride next to me, hoping it would entice me to race. I didn't and they abruptly went to Subway to eat a sandwich...
The last straw came this morning as I was coming into the office in the pouring rain. A Dark Shadow Grey GT with a full body kit and mild wing gave me a few revs while I was waiting to take a left. It was a nice way to start the week.
Now if you're a GT owner, don't take this as a challenge from me to you. This is simply me telling you to slow your role and understand that you cars aren't really that fast.
