Kenny Koretsky took the provisional Pro Stock pole for Sunday's Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after driving the Nitrofish/Indicom Pontiac GXP to a 6.724 e.t. at 204.05 mph.
"I have to give a lot of credit to Eddie Guarnaccia, my crew chief," Koretsky said. "He's been working on this new motor combination. We've been struggling all year and we're finally getting it figured out. Just so everyone knows, we rent our motors from Tom Hammonds and we had a new motor shipped in this morning. Now that we're No. 1, we may be able to try the new motor tomorrow morning - this is pretty exciting for us."
Koretsky's best qualifying effort prior to this weekend was No. 3, a feat he's accomplished seven times, and most recently at last July's Mile-High Nationals in Denver.
"I truly believe that because we've been able to work with Tom's motors for three races in a row without any changes, it's let Eddie get a handle on the tune-up," Koretsky explained. "It's also exciting for Tom because now he knows he has sufficient power. I also have to say that this is only our ninth run on this new Pontiac GXP. It's a brand-new Jerry Bickel car. Greg Stanfield has one and we have one. Bickel's new Pontiac is a fabulous racecar.
"We ran real good in Pomona and we should have qualified in Gainesville. Our first run on the car was at Valdosta prior to Gainesville, so switching cars has been really tough, especially when the weather didn't cooperate the way you would have wanted. We came back and were the fifth quickest car at Houston in Q3 and Q4, so we knew we had a good tune-up coming in here and that we would be fast."
