With the announcement that the GTO and the Firebird have no plans, as of now, to return, maybe Pontiac is hinting at something else.
Holden has been building excellent automobiles under GM for quite some time. We hadn't really known about their devilish desire to shove a V8 in everything on their roads until we were given the GTO. While some might say the GTO lacked the style, the car was all muscle. When you take a quick look at Holden's website it's easy to see that they mean business. Everything they make has style, and everything has a good amount of power. Then, HSV, the company’s performance team, tears into their cars. The result of this sinful marriage has been awe-inspiring. The body gets a tasteful touch and the car's chassis gets reworked. Power isn't a problem either since most of the HSV rides receive a heavily reworked LS-series V8.
The point to all of this would have to be Holden gets it. They are what current Pontiacs should be. Even the "lame" cars from Holden have more attitude than most of the cars available in America. Lucky for us, we aren't into Fords. GM realizes the potential of sharing products with Australia and Pontiac will be the beneficiary.
The GTO no longer rests at Pontiac dealers and we have been given the G8. From all we can tell at HPP, everyone loves this car. The car media is taking the G8 as a refreshing "home run" for Pontiac. But, what's next? We still want a rear wheel drive V8 sports car.....that has two doors!
Well maybe we have seen a sneak peek of what might be coming our way. Holden has designed the Coupe 60, their "gift to the world." If this car is sent off for production, it could easily fit into the Pontiac lineup as a G8 GXP. Maybe we won't be seeing a GTO, maybe the Firebird isn't in the minds of the hierarchy of GM. Maybe this is what has been on their minds, and maybe this is what's coming to our shores. Could this be a new car for us to lust over and dream about?
Of course it's still not an official production car currently, but that doesn't mean it's ruled out. The Australians like to buy what they want, and the consensus down under is "We want this car!" So Holden would almost be foolish to not build this E85 capable sports car. It's based of a G8 so there really isn't any rocket science involved in making this car work since it would be very similar to the Camaro.
Let's see it Pontiac!
