2009-2010 FIREBIRD AND GTO FATE CONFIRMED

2009-2010 FIREBIRD AND GTO FATE CONFIRMED

Pontiac Communications Manager Jim Hopson has confirmed, in a February 13, 2008, telephone interview, that there are no plans for a new Firebird or GTO in the Development Schedule, at least for the next two years.

He was quick to state, however, “Nothing beyond two years is set in stone at this point.” When asked about Pontiac’s rear-wheel drive (rwd) performance future, Jim replied, “Pontiac never said it would go all rear-wheel drive, but rather it would focus on some rwd vehicles. Pontiac is still the entry point of the Pontiac-Buick-GMC channel. As such, it is set up to attract people into that channel. The division will have a variety of vehicles focused on performance and style and will see more rwd models than in the past. The G8 is a prime example of an rwd performance Pontiac. Though rwd is still very important, Pontiac getting away from front-wheel drive completely is very unlikely.” What’s the future of Pontiac’s “Performance Division” image in the face of news that neither a Firebird nor a GTO are in the works? And let’s not forget the looming 2020 CAFÉ standard of 35 mpg for the fleet. Jim said, ”There are no plans to change the brand character of Pontiac. Performance will have to be redefined as the new CAFÉ standards come in, but Pontiac will still remain performance oriented and meet the standards.” When asked about new vehicles in the Pontiac pipeline, Jim said, “Well, of course the G8 (V-8 and V-6) is the flagship for the division. After receiving positive feedback on it from many areas, we feel we have a very solid hit on our hands. Pontiac has also brought back the all-wheel drive Vibe and Vibe GT models. Now the GT is available with an automatic trans. Previously, it could only be paired with a manual trans, which limited its market reach. “Though I can’t speak in great detail regarding new products over the next 18-24 months, I can say that they will not disappoint those looking for Pontiac to remain a performance brand.” Can the V-8 rwd G8 appease Pontiac fans pining for a Firebird or GTO? Only time and sales figures will tell.

Yes, the guys at Pontiac needs to get their head out of their asses. Because The Firebird, is where its at. When people think pontiac they think firebird. Firebird is my favorite car, all i have ever drivin was Pontiacs. my first car was a 92 grand am and my second (now) is a 97 firebird. And i love it. If Pontiac makes the new firebird idc how much it costs. I WILL BUY IT.

That deffinetly blows. My first car was a 94 Ponti Grand Prix SE, now I have my 98 Ponti Grand Prix GTP Charged. I have been waiting for a new Trans AM to come out and now looks like I gotta wait a little longer?? First the revamp on the Grand Prix into freaking 4 doors back in 04-05 and then come out with all this G crap classification. Please Pontiac return to the old/better days and jump back into the Performance arena fast and hard. All of us Ponti enthusiast would love to show up freaking Mustang and Camaro enthusiast!!

This is poor judgement on Pontiac's part not to bring back the Firebird or GTO. Just another way for Ford and Dodge to pave the way for muscle cars. I have always enjoyed driving my 79 or 89 Firebird. Fans of the Firebird and GTO should buy out the Pontiac Line and run the show. Hell we sure couldn't do any worse than those clowns that are doing it now. I guess I will just have to keep driving my old Firebirds and search the net for replacement parts. What is America coming too.

Buying a Camaro is what Bob Lutz wants. He could care less about Pontiac. How is it Chevy produces their Corvette and then they get to continue to eat up GMs money by making the Camaro. Geez, isn't there anyone in the Pontiac division willing to stand up for the Trans Am. I would buy a foreign Nissan before Lutz pushes me into buying a Camaro. Sad day, for the greatest F-Body sports car ever produced...

I'll make do with my 89 firebid formula vert, getting lots of miles on her. Wife is happy with her 09 G8 that she "lets" me drive. I dont like that they are marking up the new camaro 5Gs or more, and I can't see myself driving a ford, so guess I will have to wait and see also. [We dumped on the Indians in this nation before are we going to let them do it agin]! "[LONG LIVE PONTIAC]"!

Almost heartbroken... Looks like my 91 Firebird and 2001 Trans Am wont be having a little sister anytime soon.

Now com on guys. Im sadly insulted. I had a 2002 formula firehawk, til an fool decided to rear end me and total it. You failed at the goat because you took an aussie design... uglyfied it and threw it at us. That was sad. Give us a proper coupe, v8 and high output. yes it will cost a little to develop. Make it handle like a Nissan GTR and Ill buy if for what you ask.... make it a great handling fast car and americans will buy it... Call it a Firebird and we'll love you again... Make us fall in love again. yours truely.. the die hard

Please bring back the Firebird!! I had a new 1988 Firebird, Candy Apple Red, with grey cloth interior. I loved that car!! That was my first car, my parents bought it for me for graduation. Then in 2002 I had to get a new car so I bought the Grand Am SE1, only because Pontiac was dropping the Firebird line. It's time to bring back the FIREBIRD, TRANS AM & FORMULA!!Kim - Bayonne, NJ

i agree with everyone else i would love for my father to be able to get a retro from his high school days and honestly the firebird was always leaps and bounds ahead of the camaro in style. bring back the firebird if you want to make a real muscle car. enough said.

It's sad that Pontiac has decided to put the idea on the back burner. The only option we had, the '04-'06 GTO, wasn't well recieved and was killed off. Now, the only thig we have to look forward to is the G8. I love the new G8, but how hard would it be to offer the G8 as a two-door and call it the new GTO? The new Camaro is on the same chassis, so it shouldn't be too much toruble.

I agree with David46, that sucks indeed. I have been patiently waiting to buy a new car since I saw the Camaro concept and Kevin Morgan's concept of the *** The Trans Am would have my choice in a sports car. I suppose I will have to buy a Camaro, who knows maybe GM will wise up and still produce a Trans Am in a few years, but since I'm already in my 40's may not want another sports car after the Camaro. Sad, sad day.

Pontiac is loosing performance car sales to the retro future-tech musclecars that Ford, Chevy, and Mopar are putting out by not bringing back the Firebird name. When will the Pontiac execs realize that classic Pontiacs now terrorize other GM division fans, as well as Ford and Mopar guys with high-hp Ponchos. The real Pontiac guys stepped up and designed new heads, cranks, rods, cams and other goodies to make the power- we need a real, American-made flagship platform to represent, not some Aussie poser sedan.
