Creating A Firebird Argument

Everyone appears to be outspoken about bringing back the Firebird. What argument do you propose for its place in the GM and Pontiac car line?

So with the demise of the GTO, there are feelings that another GTO will not be met so warmly. Many feel that the car tainted the nameplate, and that it didn't deserve the badging. These people obviously have never driven a late model GTO. Now the G8 is on its way with even more to offer in terms of refinement. Has Pontiac taken a new direction and built away from the Firebird?

The G8 sits right in the $25,000 and $31,000 range when well equipped. What does this mean for a Firebird sitting in this range?

1. GM needs to be profitable to help their financial trouble. It wouldn't make any sense to have two divisions with almost the same product competing against each other anymore given this situation. It makes more long term sense to release one car and then release the other one a few years later after sales of the first have peaked and start to lose momentum. The new Mustang may already be out but they still have the Dodge Challenger to deal with. The Firebird is an ace up GMs sleeve that needs to be used wisely. They know this. They aren't building away from it. They're building up to it. I want a new Firebird too but it's just not the right time. Until it is time I'll be happy playing with my 2001 model.

2. GM shot itself in the foot when they took the Firebird out of the Pontiac lineup. My '72 Firebird still gets plenty of compliments when I do drive it- the long hood w/ the Formula scoops, the twin oval grilles, and the overall lines and presence of the car make people look at the car, at a light or on the freeway. A modern version of the G2 Bird would give a performance Pontiac some distinction from the new Camaro.

3. I would like to see a second generation firebird body style as opposed to the new camaro. It needs to have the 70-72 nose to make it distinctive and at least 450 hp to make it the Firebird that it needs to be. Until they produce something as potent and popular I will keep driving my 78 Gold Edition and my 99 WS6.

4. although the 2010 camaro concept is going to have the Ls2 6.0 liter pushing 400hp i want to see the firebird top that. pontiac needs to bring it back! i know it would be the hottest car on the market. I wasn't impressed with the new mustang or the challenger but i think the firebird would put everything else to shame.

5. Hummm welp lets see here....As far as I'm concerned in "MY HUMBLE OPINION" the LAST generation GTO was a HUGE JOKE!!! what an ugly piece of crapola!! LQQKED like something every other freakin 70 year old was driving! LoL
Yeah sure it was plenty fast but ya gotta admit it lacked the LQQKS of a REAL GTO or even the LQQKS of a Firebird!So with that said HELLO PONCHO isnt it about time you built something that NOT only flies but LQQKS great doing it????

6. The Firebird has always been a more refined and more powerfull version of the Camero. It would definately help the bean counters bottom line to release the Firebird soon after the Camero comes out. Make it the Corvette for those who can not afford a real Vette.

7. I agree with all who say the fire bird needs to be built and the second gen is a good styling point to start at.What makes the best formula for retro styling is make it look like what it was, not some new take on an old style ,but up date every thing else so it performs like new musle imagen for a moment if the gto looked exactly like a 71 gto it would have been an instant hit. respect the styling of the cars that have won our harts don't pevert them.
in closing ,bring the firebird back with respect and gobbs of power and everyone wins even GM.
